Validating an Amharic version of the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) in individuals with leprosy in Ethiopia

Background Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has now become an indispensable outcome measure in many randomized clinical trials and other studies. It provides the patient’s voice measuring health improvement or decline assessing treatment effectiveness. A validated Amharic version HRQoL assessment tool was needed for leprosy Ethiopia. The SF-36 chosen but a not available. We describe how this developed. Methods translated from English into evaluated content acceptability patient focus group. Back translation performed. Validity reliability affected individuals tested with 100 patients attending clinic at ALERT hospital compared to WHOQOL-BREF. Results versions both WHOQOL-BREF had good validity amongst individuals. Internal consistency estimates each domain/scale exceeded 0.70. better convergent discriminant than group patients.
